Brownie Layer
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup water
Cookie Layer
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tsp molasses
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch flaky sea salt for garnish

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Melt 1 cup of butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden brown and aromatic, then pour into a large bowl.
  3. Whisk in the sugars, let cool for 5 minutes, then beat in the eggs and vanilla.
  4. Whisk the dry brownie ingredients together and fold into the wet mixture, then stir in the chocolate chips and water.
  5. Spread the brownie batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Prepare the cookie layer by mixing the butter, sugars, egg yolk, molasses, vanilla, and dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of cookie dough over the brownie batter and gently spread to create a top layer.
  8. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and bake for 45-50 minutes until the edges are set.
  9. Cool completely in the pan before slicing into 16 bars.
